In the movie Reign over Me, the main character Charlie Fineman lost his family from the 9/11 accident and can notice that all of his strange behaviors began from it and was like the basic cause. As people might notice very easily, Charlie is suffering from a behavior disorder, a disorder which involves the person goes through a course of emotional and mental suffering that can be characterized by the patient’s behavior. Based on his back ground with a severe traumatic experience/memory, Charlie can be diagnosed with a transition from Acute Stress Disorder to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder or also referred to as PTSD. Acute Stress Disorder is the anxiety and behavioral disturbances that happen to someone within their first month exposure to an extreme trauma. Some of the symptoms of this disorder include dissociation, a perceived detachment of the mind from the emotional state or even the body. Also one other main symptom of this disorder is the avoidance of situation or stimuli that bring up the memories of the trauma. Charlie as one can see in the movie, he avoids talking about any topic that relates to his family and avoids remembering the accident which made him constantly listen to loud music with headphones. This is a sign of detachment of the mind where he is in his own little world and a dreamlike unreal place like most people who suffer from this disorder. But on the other hand, Charlie is in the stage where he is slowly transferring from acute stress disorder to PTSD. People with PTSD have similar symptoms with acute stress disorder but continues to the time period of until 6 month with the symptoms. Just like the people with PTSD, it is very noticeable that Charlie has symptoms such as loss of sustained beliefs about people or society, hopelessness, difficulties in previously established relationships. The treatment that would be recommended for acute stress disorder and PTSD would be cognitive behavioral therapy. With an expert, the patient will slowly talk and discuss more about the actual event in order to help the patient to change their thoughts about the actual event and how the patient needs to learn how to get rid of his or her anxieties and distress. Secondly it will help the patient to slowly get rid of the several negative symptoms her or she had after the event. As a friend of Charlie, it would be the best ways to help him by sharing my own personal memories and events in order to help him realize how important it is for him to communicate and how crucial it is for him focus on the reality and his relationship with different people in his society.
In conclusion, Charlie Fineman from the movie Reign over Me suffers from the transitions from acute stress disorder to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, where it would be crucial and important for him to really find out a ways to communicate and share his thoughts about the event and be able to continue his social life.
